Chinese Imperial Courts (400 BC)
Pugs originated in China around 400 BC, where they were bred to be companions for Chinese emperors. These dogs lived in luxury in the imperial palaces and were so valued that they had their own guards.
Dutch Trading Company (1500s)
Dutch traders brought pugs to Europe in the 16th century. The breed became particularly popular in Holland, where they became the official dog of the House of Orange after a pug saved Prince William's life by alerting him to approaching assassins.
European Royalty (1600s-1700s)
Pugs became fashionable among European nobility. Queen Victoria was a passionate pug lover and had many pugs throughout her life, helping to popularize the breed in England.
